Detached Youth Work is a model of youth work practice, targeted at vulnerable young people, which takes place on young people’s own territory such as streets, cafes, parks and pubs at times that are appropriate to them and on their terms.
It begins from where young people are in terms of their values, attitudes, issues and ambitions and is concerned with their personal and social development. It is characterised by purposeful interaction between youth workers and young people and utilises a range of youth and community work methods.

Thinking on your feet
“Thinking on your feet” was a National Development Project commissioned by the Scottish Executive in 1998 led by the Prince’s Trust. The focus was on youth work with vulnerable young people, and looked at how detached and outreach youth work might be further developed.
One of the results of the project was the production of good practice guidelines and a training pack which covered practice issues such as planning, managing and measuring outreach and detached youth work.

 This resource is accompanied by StreetWise which is a database tool that has been specifically designed to support those involved in detached and outreach youth work to plan, record, monitor and evaluate their work.
The production of Streetwise was a collaborative project involving the Prince's Trust, Falkirk Council and Stirling Council building on the 'Thinking on Your Feet' project.
StreetWise provides detached and outreach youth workers with a framework that enables them to:
- Detail the inputs to individual detached and outreach youth work sessions.
- Detail the outputs of individual detached and outreach youth work sessions.
- Detail the outcomes of individual detached and outreach youth work sessions.
- Access operational and management reports detailing key data for a range of detached and outreach youth work sessions.
