The Prince's Trust - Glasgow

The Prince's Trust work in partnership with other agencies to deliver their"Team Programme" that has been developed to provide motivation and confidence building training to young people aged between sixteen and twenty-five. Within this context they have identified literacy and numeracy issues as a significant barrier to the further development of young people participating in the project.

As part of their response The Prince's Trust has undertaken the production of a Literacy and Numeracy Toolkit, developed in Glasgow but providing a model for wider role-out across Scotland. It is hoped that the work will be completed May/June 2005 and that the toolkit and a user's guide will have been produced to facilitate the expansion of a literacies component across the"Team Programme" within Scotland.

Second Quarterly Visit – 17th June 2005

This Pilot has recently completed Phase one of its action plan and has embarked on Phase two. The Princes’ Trust links with a range of partners and organisations to deliver the 12 week Team Programme. This, and the disparity of resource form one team venue to another, resulted in the initial evaluation and analysis stage of the work taking longer that was initially envisaged. The Trust operates over five bases in Glasgow; some are based within college premises while others are based in local community venues. In general the Teams based within college premises fare far better than their counterparts as they are able to access better resources and support from college staff and departments. As a result the working group set up by the Trust, had difficulty in identifying a base line from which to build.

Because of this and because the main strategic partner is the Anniesland College, they may struggle to bring the project in on time. This has already been flagged up to the Trust. The end of summer term is very close and a Staff Toolkit has yet to be designed and produced. This concern has already been flagged up to Ken Imrie, Area Manager for the Trust and we are awaiting his reply.

If the working group can produce the Toolkit during the summer, Phase three; the implementation and evaluation of the Toolkit can be completed satisfactorily in a relatively short period of time.
