What are Modern Apprenticeships?
The Modern Apprenticeship in Youth Work provides employees 16+ with the knowledge, understanding and competence needed to work at the level of skill required to work with young people. Each modern apprentice has their own training plan agreed with their employer or appointed training organisation set-up prior to starting. The training plan provides both on-the-job training with their employer and off the job training in order to achieve a Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) at Level 3. This qualification is based on the National Occupational Standards for Youth Work held by PAULO the National Training Organisation for Community based learning and development.
While working towards their SVQ at Level 3 apprentices develop their Core Skills in Numeracy, Communication, Information Technology, Problem Solving and Working with Others. The Core Skills are assessed and would form an essential part of the Modern Apprenticeship in Youth Work.
How long would a Modern Apprenticeship in Youth Work take to complete?
It is one of the strengths of Modern Apprenticeships that they are flexible and have no fixed time limit. In line with the individual's training plan they take account of each individual's knowledge, skills and experience and the demands of the youth work involved. Progress is measured by the acquisition of skills, and not by time-serving however, in many cases the apprentice would expect to complete within approximately two years.
It is anticipated that following an initial pilot period where the programme will be tried and tested in selected areas, that there will be a bank of resources, knowledge and experience available for use by any organisation wishing to develop the Modern Apprenticeship programme locally.
